Odilon Redon (1840-1916) was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. His works concern the world of dreams, fantasy and the imagination. He first became famous for his monochromatic works expressing the powers of black, but later in his career began to adopt a more colourful palette. His pastels and oil paintings are riotous with colour, consisting mostly of portraits and floral still lifes. Redon had a keen interest in Hindu and Buddhist religion and culture, and the figure of the Buddha increasingly showed in his work.
