Joseph Noel Paton (1821-1901) was a Scottish artist, illustrator and sculptor. He was also a poet and had a deep-seated interest in, and knowledge of Scottish folklore and Celtic legends. Whilst studying briefly at the Royal Academy in London in 1843, he met John Everett Millais who asked him to join the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Paton turned down the invitation, although he painted in the Pre-Raphaelite style and became a painter of historical, fairy, allegorical and religious subjects.
