Willem Hekking (1796-1862) was born in Amsterdam to the wallpaper painter Theodorus Hekking (1766–1819), who was proven to be a member of the Luke Guild in 1793 and created landscapes, architecture and cityscapes. Hekking was a student of Anthonij van den Bosch. Initially working as a wallpaper painter like his father, he later turned to ink and watercolour painting and pen drawing. From 1813 to 1838, he mainly exhibited still lifes of flowers and fruits in exhibitions in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
