Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale: Mordred laid his ear beside the door and there half heard the coming of Arthur

Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale (1871-1945) was an illustrator, painter and watercolour artist, much of her work being in the Pre-Raphaelite style. She was influenced by John Byam Liston Shaw, a protégé of John Everett Millais much influenced by John William Waterhouse. She also produced stained-glass windows and book illustrations, following the Pre-Raphaelite tradition of applied art made famous by William Morris.

This watercolour may have been made in connection with the twenty-one illustrations that Brickdale made for an edition of Alfred Tennyson's The Idylls of the King published in 1911.
