Hugh Hughes (1790-1863) was a Welsh painter, engraver and writer. Born at Pwllygwichiad, near Llandudno, he learned wood-engraving and oil-painting at an early age.
His wood-engravings entitled Beauties of Cambria was published in 1823 and became his best-known work. All the views were engraved by himself, fifty-eight from his own drawings. His engraving style has been compared to that of Thomas Bewick, and his treatment of natural objects was realistic, minute, and laborious, and his foliage always graceful.
