Christopher Wood: Girl and Lamp in a Cornish Window, 1928

Christopher Wood (1902-1930) met the artist Augustus John whilst at Liverpool University who encouraged him to pursue an artistic career. He went on to train as a painter at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he met many artists including Jean Cocteau and Picasso. On returning to England he moved to Cornwall, joining Ben and Winifred Nicholson who had located there.

Wood painted many coastal scenes, and his finest works are considered to be those painted during his time in Brittany in 1929. His short life came to an end when, after suffering from severe psychosis he committed suicide in 1930.
