Carl Holsøe: Seamstress Sewing in an Interior

Carl Holsøe (1863-1935) was a leading member of the Danish school of painting in the second half of the 19th and early 20th century, and was highly regarded by colleagues and collectors alike. He studied at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen between 1882-1884, and subsequently at the Artist’s ‘Studieskole’ under Peder Severin Kroyer, perhaps the most influential Danish artist of his generation.

Escaping from the sentimentality of Golden Age interiors, Holsøe imbued this traditional genre with a sense of timeless sanctity. Through the depiction of solitary, usually female figures with concealed identities, Holsøe's paintings evoke the brooding nature of introspection and self-absorption. His work, influenced by the 17th Century interiors of the Dutch masters Vermeer, de Hooch, and ter Borch, explored the emotional content inherent in the household interior. Such scenes, with often sparsely furnished rooms were a feature of Danish painting in the  latter part of the 19th Century.
