Tirzah Garwood: The Springtime of Flight, 1950

Eileen Lucy "Tirzah" Garwood (1908-1951) was a British wood-engraver, painter, author, and a member of the Great Bardfield Artists. Her work is known for depicting people, places and animals in domestic scenes "caught in a fleeting moment". Her style is praised for its touches of humour and eccentricity. During her time with the Great Bardfield Artists, Garwood worked with Charlotte Bawden in creating exquisite marbled papers, some of which are now in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

She married the artist Eric Ravilious in 1930 and had three children. They collaborated on some projects together, most notably the mural at the Midland Hotel, Morecambe. During the winter of 1941 Garwood became ill with breast cancer and underwent emergency surgery in March 1942. It was at this time that she wrote her autobiography titled 'Long Live Great Bardfield & Love to You All'. She was again diagnosed with cancer in early 1948, and lived in a nursing home near Colchester from 1950, where she died in 1951.
