Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale: Evelyn Hope, 1908

Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale (1871-1945) was an illustrator, painter and watercolour artist, much of her work being in the Pre-Raphaelite style. She was influenced by John Byam Liston Shaw, a protégé of John Everett Millais much influenced by John William Waterhouse. She also produced stained-glass windows and book illustrations, following the Pre-Raphaelite tradition of applied art made famous by William Morris.

Evelyn Hope is a poem written by Robert Browning in his work "Men and Women", 1855, and is regarded as one of his most musical and tender. The theme is that of a love which, from its conditions, could not be reciprocated, yet would prove undying.
