Marianne Stokes: Angels Entertaining the Holy Child

Born in Austria, Marianne Stokes (1855-1927) settled in England after her marriage to Adrian Scott Stokes, the landscape painter, whom she had met in Pont-Aven.They lived in St Ives, Cornwall where Marianne was a member of the Newlyn School, and her husband was a pivotal member of the early St Ives colony and first president of their Arts Club. 

Marianne was later inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite movement, and she painted flat compositions in tempera and gesso, her paintings giving the impression of being frescoes on plaster surfaces. Angels Entertaining the Holy Child was painted in 1893, and exhibited at the Royal Academy where it was well received. The artist's ability to capture the Madonna with reverence and delicate feeling, but without sentimentality was especially noted.
